Liz's story

liz's story

The work we do at the Hospice is as varied and different as the people we help every day. But perhaps Liz McCreanor's story reflects best the kind of care that your donations can help make possible.

Albert McCreanor used to come over to Glasgow from his native Belfast to follow his football team. He was introduced to his beloved Liz through mutual friends and the pair hit it off right away.

A painter and decorater to trade, Albert was a big strapping man with a personality to match. Liz and Albert were clearly made for each other and had plans to get married. Then suddenly Albert was diagnosed with a brain tumour and they had to get used to an entirely different future.

Liz works as a home carer and soon found herself coping with a more profound experience as the carer of a loved one.

In Albert's last 10 days, Liz was able to experience first hand the care and support the Hospice is there to provide.

Part of what the Hospice does is help people deal with unfinished business. This can mean settling old quarrels or putting wrongs right. But in Albert and Liz's case it meant going ahead with the postponed wedding.

Hospice Chaplain Stuart Webster set the wheels in motion. Cake, champagne and even a surprise visit from some of Albert's footballing heroes made it a day to remember. But most importantly, Liz and Albert were able to seal their longstanding bond in the presence of their closest family. Albert died peacefully six days later.

Liz admits life without Albert is hard but has taken some comfort in helping the Hospice care for others the way we did for her husband, organising charity nights and other fundraisers.

Liz and Albert's story is only one of the hundreds of stories we could tell you, and every story is only made possible by donations from people like you.

Helping us continue in our work can be a truly lasting legacy for the loved ones you choose to remember.
